[IKE17-6]Children and Smartphones
To protect children from risks related to use of a smartphone, it is important for parents and guardians to become familiar with their usage of the Internet, community sites, SNS sites, etc. and keep an eye on them.

□Smartphone Risks
・Smartphone dependency: Difficulty in ending no-cost communication and interaction on community sites, leading to sleep deprivation and health issues.
・High cost: Addiction to games and purchase of related items to improve score, resulting in high invoices in the following month.
・Online bullying: use of abusive language in written messages, exclusion from the group
・Luring children out, identity fraud: Children may join a group of people from a community interest site
to find out that members are a different sex or age than expected.

□Cautionary notes when giving a child a smartphone
・Be sure to set filtering: Prevent access to sites that have harmful influence. Inquire about how to do this at the smartphone store.
・Establish family rules for use of smartphones: Rules like “Smartphone use ends at 9:00pm,” or “No writing bad things about anybody” are important to establish.
