[IKE22-01]【Age of Majority Lowered from 20 to 18】: The age of adulthood had long been set at 20 in Japan, but it was lowered to 18 from April 1st, 2022.
The following explains what changes will occur following the revision.

●What you can do when you turn 18 years old
・Entering into contracts without your parents’ consent to purchase a mobile phone, take out a loan, sign up for a credit card, rent a room, etc.
・Obtaining national qualifications such as a certified accountant, judicial scrivener, licensed doctor or licensed pharmacist.
・Getting married.
※With the minimum allowable marriage age for women raised from 16 to 18, the legal age for marriage is now set at 18 for both men and women.
・People with gender identity disorder can request a ruling of change in recognition of gender status.

●What you cannot do until you are 20 years old
・Drinking alcohol
・Smoking
・Public gambling, such as betting on horse, bicycle, motorcycle and boat races
・Adopting a child
・Getting a large or mid-sized motor vehicle license
※A standard motor vehicle license can be acquired from the age of 18 and over as is presently allowed.
